More than likely you are looking for a netbook for fantastic mobility to connect at work, school, or on the go.  Of course you're also probably looking at netbooks because of their affordability.

Whatever your reasons for buying a cheap netbook, make sure you are very clear about how you plan on using it.  Ask yourself a few questions and honestly answer them  before forking out the cash. 

What computing chores do I see myself running? How much do I want to spend? Do I really need a netbook? These are just some examples of the type of questions you may want to ask yourself.

For example, if you plan on using your netbook laptop for extended periods of time on battery power alone, make sure you pick one up that offers you ample battery runtime.  And just because two similar netbooks might look small and cute, this doesn't necessarily mean both will get the same battery life, so definitely pay attention to key details when shopping for your netbook. We've seen small netbooks that achieved 3 hours, yet a similarly sized netbook achieved a whopping 12 hours. There is more than meets the eye!

Also don't forget that netbooks are typically designed for basic computing tasks, so if you plan on performing heavy duty computing chores, a desktop PC or full sized laptop will be a better option.  

On the other hand if you're looking for a super small, cool, and trendy as hell minicomputer for essential tasks like word processing, Internet surfing, movies, and music, etc., a cheap netbook will be a fantastic purchasing decision.
Key Specifications To Look For In All Netbooks
Here is a brief breakdown detailing some of the key specifications that you will want to look at in both expensive and  cheap netbooks.

  • Processor. This should be a top priority when looking for a cheap netbook. Choose one that offers enough processing power to handle your current needs and potential future needs. Netbooks that use Intel's Atom N270 CPU or better is a solid starting point.
  • Screen. While it is expected that netbooks have smaller screens than the typical laptop, it is best that you buy one with at least a 10-inch screen. 10-inch screens are big enough to be useful, and easy enough on the eyes.  If you want a netbook smaller than 10-inches, I would recommend you go to your local Best Buy and test drive one.
  • Hard Drive. Just because a netbook is small, you don't always have to settle for a small hard drive. There are many cheap netbooks with 120GB or bigger hard drives. 120GB is a great starting point. You may be grateful for the extra storage once you start using your netbook.
  • Battery. Battery runtime should be another top priority when shopping for a netbook.  Many netbooks achieve approximately 3 hours, though some claim to go up to a whopping 14 hours. Make sure you pay attention to this specification. Of course if you want more from your netbook, or you expect to be using it for hours on end, a spare battery makes a fantastic accessory too for any model. There are plenty of affordable supplemental batteries with extended life to give more power to your netbooks too.
  • Keyboard. As netbooks are smaller in size, the typical netbook keyboard is smaller too. But this does not mean that netbook keyboards are useless. Keyboard size is another reason a 10-inch or larger netbook is preferred. Many netbooks have well-laid out keyboards, or spaced keys similar to the Apple MacBook to make typing easier and to help prevent you from pressing neighboring keys at the same time.  There are definitely cheap netbooks with great keyboard designs and lay-outs, so shop around, read reviews, and if possible test drive the netbook at your local retailer. This will insure you that the keyboard isn't going to give you a frustrating computing experience.
  • I/O Ports.  You will definitely need USB ports for all your USB devices like USB memory sticks, keyboards, mice, and many other devices that require USB connections. Try to find netbooks that come with two or more USB ports. Also check out output options such as HDMI.  With HDMI your netbook becomes a portable movie player that you can hook up to just about any HDTV plasma or LCD. 
  • Wireless Connectivity. You are buying a netbook because you want to be connected anywhere, anytime.  Pretty much any netbook you are buying is Wi-Fi-ready. Now if you have a Smartphone or other Bluetooth device that you want to connect to your netbook, make sure you pick one up with Bluetooth wireless technology. Many cheap netbooks do not include Bluetooth.
