Aspire Pink AOA150-1690 Netbook Review
The Acer
Aspire One pink model
AOA150-1690 is a great netbook for students and even business travelers
who
like to travel light. It
is very
affordable and extremely lightweight, weighing just over 2 pounds.
The Acer Aspire pink
netbook has a vivid 8.9-inch glossy WSVGA LED backlit display,
integrated
webcam perfect for day to day web video chatting, and it even runs on
Intel's newer mobile processor the Atom.
It is
also packed with a large capacity 160 GB hard drive that runs the long
time
running and stable Windows XP operating system.
Best of all these features
of course come in a cool and stylish pink chassis.
The
finish of the Aspire pink netbook is smooth, and the exterior is
accented with some
distinct details like a vivid orange hinge ring.
Within the Acer Aspire
pink you will find a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor which was designed
specifically for mobile mini netbooks.
This processor is amazing and the gurus at
Intel infused it with a brand
new design structure. On
a technical
level this design structure is called hafnium infused circuitry.
Cool Acer
Aspire Pinkies Featuring Intel Atom CPU's
But how does Intel's new
processor design structure benefit me the user?
Well
in a nutshell this
technology reduces electrical current leakage in transistors to
conserve energy
and thus it gives you more time away from the electrical outlet.
With
only the included
3-cell battery the
Acer Aspire Pink AOA150-1690 still gets up to 2.5 hours of
runtime.
Not
too bad at all for a 3-cell but we still would have liked to see longer
battery runtime overall out of such a small netbook.
Other features within the
Acer Aspire pink netbook include 1 GB of installed RAM but if you
decide to
upgrade it
can handle up to 1.5 GB’s of maximum memory capacity.
Other standard features
include a 54g 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless networking card, multi-format
digital memory
card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, and built-in email, web browsing, and
digital
media applications come standard too among others.
The Acer Aspire pink
AOA150-1690 comes preloaded with Microsoft’s Windows XP Home operating
system
so it will be familiar to just about anyone who’s owned a PC within
recent
years.
As
a recap
when netbooks first
came to market they started out running on a light but efficient Linux
based
operating system and so weren’t quite accepted mainstream at the time. Now running Windows XP you
can run just about
any software application out there.
The Acer Aspire pink
netbooks are a great overall netbook in a stylish and totally
affordable
package.

Processor:
The Intel Atom processor uses
a brand new internal design that allows Intel to pack
in 47 million transistors on a chip only .87 inches in size. What’s crazy is that the
new Atom N270 only
uses just 2.5 watts of power.
That
is less
than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor in fact. Keep in mind a typical
household light bulb
uses from 45 to 75 watts. Pretty
impressive!
The included 1.6 GHz Atom
N270 processor also includes what is called a power optimized front
side bus
that runs at 533 MHz. This
allows for
faster data transfer, especially with more demanding applications. Let’s not forget the Atom
N270 also boasts an
ample 512 KB L2 cache.
Storage:
This
version of the Acer Aspire One
comes with a 160 GB hard disk drive that runs at 5400 RPM and
so it offers enough performance and storage to hold a tongs of
MP3's, movies, games, and a large collection of
software.
The included Serial ATA (SATA)
hard drive is also effiecient
compared to laptop hard drives of yesterday which ran on the EIDE
interface.
Memory:
Within
the Acer Aspire Pink
you will find 1 GB of installed memory/RAM
standard.
There is
512 MB of memory
installed on the system board and there is one swappable 512 MB RAM
stick so
you can pickup a 1 GB stick at any computer retail or e-tail store and
expand
the system to a total maximum memory capacity of 1.5 GB of RAM.
DVD/CD Drive:
Because
of netbooks petite physical size, the Acer
Aspire One Pink netbook also does not come with an
integrated optical drive, but an optional CD/DVD read/write drive can
always be
connected to the laptop via one of its three USB 2.0 ports if needed.
Keep in mind netbooks
sacrifice CD/DVD
capability to cut down on physical size, battery usage, and price.
This is
the tradeoff with netbooks but a welcoming tradoff most definitely.
Connectivity:
Among
connectivity features
the Acer Aspire One pink netbook has an integrated
54g wireless LAN card that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g
wireless networks.
It also features what Acer calls SignalUp technology for enhanced
antenna performance.
This makes these mini mobile laptops the perfect Internet café
companion.
The Acer Aspire pink has
one dedicated SD flash memory card slot as well as a second multi card
reader
that's compatible with five different types of memory cards including
Secure
Digital, Multi Media Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and
xD-Picture Card. Since
it has both a multi-in-1 card reader and a SD card reader this allows
you for
example to download photos from the multi reader to share with others
and store
to the SD card as an internal storage device at the same time.
The Acer Aspire pink
netbook also features 3 USB 2.0 ports, perfect for all your
connectivity needs,
1 VGA monitor port to connect it to your favorite computer monitor, LCD
or
Plasm TV, 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack, and an RJ-45 port for
10/100
wired Ethernet connections.
Screen,
Video and Audio:
The
Acer Aspire Pink
AOA150-1690 netbook comes standard with an 8.9-inch screen that has a
native WSVGA
resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.
Video is powered by the Intel
Graphics
Media
Accelerator 950 that uses shared video memory with the main systems
memory.
This is pretty standard for netbooks and we’re happy to inform the
Intel 950
graphics chips are decent performers.
One thing worth noting is what
Acer calls their CrystalBrite display technology.
Pretty much Acer
guarantees you the best
possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding
light and
internal ray. Compared
to normal TFT
LCDs, Acer claims their CrystalBrite technology is able to read color
coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating
high-fidelity colors in all environments.
Sounds
cool but is the technology simply another marketing term?
Regardless, we're happy to inform you that
after tinkering with the Acer Aspire pink model AOA150-1690
ourselves the screen is pretty darn good for it had plenty of
brightness for the various light conditions that we exposed it to.
Last but not least the
Aspire pink netbook also includes an integrated audio card for audio
playback
and there are two stereo speakers which offer adequate sound playback
when
needed, plus like typical netbooks the Acer Aspire pink has a built-in
webcam
that is perfect for online video chatting.
